Jimmy Carr to bring Rapier Wit tour to Plymouth Pavilions
Following two hilarious shows last summer, Jimmy Carr is set to bring his new show, Rapier Wit, to Plymouth Pavilions next year.
A heady mix of artistic integrity, loyalty and avarice has put Jimmy back on the road. If you only see one comedy show this year… What’s the matter with you? Get out more!
The Rapier Wit tour will feature 120 minutes of fresh, uncensored material, completely updated from that seen in any of his previous performances and DVD releases.
A ‘rapier’ is the long sword of a gentleman. ‘Rapier wit’ is defined as clever, quick, intelligent humour.
Please note, Jimmy Carr doesn’t have ‘the long sword of a gentleman’ and even if you like him, ‘clever, quick and intelligent’ is a bit of a stretch.
He has, however, deservedly earned his place among the premiere league of British comics.
His stand-up achievements to date include a British Comedy Award for Best Live Stand Up Tour, a Loaded LAFTA Award for Best Stand Up, a Perrier Award nomination, Best Stand Up at the Time Out Awards and Best on Screen Newcomer from the Royal Television Society.
Jimmy hits Plymouth Pavilions on July 30, 2010. Tickets cost £22.50 and go on sale at 10am on November 19, 2009 from 0845 146 1460 and http://www.plymouthpavilions.com

Peter Andre Coming To Plymouth
Book your overnight stay At The Avalon Guest House by visiting www.avalonguesthouse.moonfruit.com as Pop sensation Peter Andre will bring an extravagant live show to Plymouth next year as he bids to relaunch his music career in style.Staff at Plymouth Pavilions are bracing themselves for a frenzied response from the Australian superstar's fans on Friday (Sept 25), when tickets for March's concert go on sale. While his private life has dominated the headlines, the 36-year-old's comeback album 'Revelation' shot into the charts at Number Three on Sunday. It beat releases from rapper Jay-Z and songwriter David Gray, while his latest single 'Behind Closed Doors' peaked at an impressive Number Four on the UK charts.Peter Andre's Plymouth show, expected to be a sell-out, will be part of a UK tour that will see him hit the road for almost a month, landing in the city on March 22.Pavilions bosses are expecting tickets to fly out of the door over the weekend, with the singer and reality TV star set to hit our screens as a showbiz reporter for television chat show This Morning.Marketing officer Robert Maltby said: "Peter Andre is so current and topical at the moment."Not only has his music career been totally re-launched but everybody is so intrigued about what is going on in his private life."An impressive Number Three position in the album charts on Sunday, only losing out to Vera Lynn and Muse, really shows that the UK are loving his new sound and can really connect with the meaning behind some of his tracks."I've seen the public going wild last week when Peter was doing promotional appearances to promote his album and think tickets to see him live will send fans into another frenzy."March's shows will be Andre's first full concert tour since his much-publicised split from wife Katie Price – aka Jordan – earlier this year. The pair met on reality TV show 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!', sparking unprecedented interest from the UK press and a documentary series following their relationship for four years.Speaking after announcing his March tour, the man best known for the 1995 hit Mysterious Girl promised fans an effects-filled but 'grown up' stage show.He said: "Touring is the ultimate professional dream."Things will be a bit different from my last show as I'm 36, so I've got to grow up a bit."Take That still dance and they look great but I want to leave the dancing to the dancers – I might join in occasionally but it's not something I want to focus on."It'll be about the great sounding band, great lighting, the effects."Peter Andre was discovered on the Australian TV talent show New Faces in 1990 after doing an impression of pop star Bobby Brown. He released his first single in 1992 and shot to fame in the UK three years later. With a devoted following of teenage girls, two Number One singles followed in 1996 – 'Flava' and 'I Feel You'. He unsuccessfully dabbled with becoming an R&B artist in the late 1990s before a 2004 re-release of 'Mysterious Girl' saw him top the charts once again. His romance with former glamour model Jordan continues to dominate magazines in Britain, while the subject matter of his latest album is said to have been inspired by the couple's high-profile split.Peter Andre's gig is just the latest in an ever-expanding list of stars gracing the city venue, including Mercury Prize winner Dizzee Rascal, Lily Allen, Alice Cooper, The Specials and Bloc Party.Tickets, priced at £23, go on sale at 9am on Friday, September 25, and are available from the box office by calling 0845 146 1460.

Plymouth Named in Top Ten Tourist Destinations
THE city's tourism industry is gearing up for a bumper summer after Plymouth was named as one of the top 10 destinations in the country.
Hoteliers, restaurateurs and traders welcomed the city's inclusion in Which? Holiday's list of recommended destinations, as tourism chiefs revealed that the industry was worth more than £300million to Plymouth.
Top chef Chris Tanner said: "It's fantastic news for Plymouth", and it was about time the city had some recognition. "This is a great part of the world," he said.
Andrew Huckerby, director of the Kitley House Hotel, who is preparing to launch the Visit Plymouth partnership to promote the city as a destination, said: "I'm delighted that Plymouth is being recognised for the destination that it's becoming.
"This is a real boost for Plymouth, and for Devon and Cornwall as well."
Mr Huckerby said visitors to the city spent more than £300million a year during their stay, and he would be announcing a more precise figure at the Visit Plymouth launch event tomorrow.
Richard Smith, Plymouth Gin's brand home director and economy and tourism chief at the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, added: "This only confirms what some of us have been saying for some time: that Plymouth has a huge amount to offer visitors. It also confirms that Plymouth is ideal for short breaks, and we're exactly right as a gateway for places around us."
He added: "Which? is a hugely respected name and I think this can only do us good – not before time. What the city has to realise is that we have got a lot to offer, and we need to market it."
Mike Jones, general manager at Drake Circus, said: "It's no surprise to us that Plymouth has been identified as a great holiday destination in this survey. Since we have opened we have seen growing numbers of tourists visiting Drake Circus as part of their holiday, and we're a destination for coach holidays, especially from South Wales.
"Retail-wise, Plymouth has a lot to offer across the spectrum, and visitors to the city enjoy this."
Which? Holiday is predicting that 2009 could be a bumper year for British tourism, with people choosing to holiday close to home due to the recession and the low value of the pound against the euro.
As a result, the magazine published a list of 'Ten of the places we love to visit across this great land.'
The list, which did not rank the destinations against each other, placed Plymouth alongside traditional holiday hotspots such as the Cotswolds and Bowness-on-Windermere in the Lake District. The feature said Plymouth 'is completely undervalued as a tourist destination, despite having so much on offer.'
"With Dartmoor only 10 minutes' drive from the city centre, and the beaches of South Devon or Cornwall only a few minutes away, Plymouth is the perfect destination for anyone wanting to combine a city break with an escape to the country," it said.
Louise McShane, owner of the Avalon guest house on the Hoe and secretary of the Plymouth Hospitality Association, said the top 10 position was 'jolly good news. It's about time Plymouth was put on the map', she said.
Mrs McShane said the tourist season was looking promising, with a good level of bookings including European tourists choosing to holiday in Britain, perhaps because of the weak pound.
However, there are also reports that visitors from the USA and the Far East will be staying away from Britain due to the recession.
David Draffan, of the Plymouth Summer Festival team, said: "For such a respected organisation as Which? to highlight Plymouth in its top 10 is a huge boost for the city.
"Now the secret is out nationally I hope families who are sitting down to plan their summer holidays will listen to what the experts at Which? are saying and make Plymouth and the Plymouth Summer Festival their choice for 2009."
Plymouth Summer Festival was set up two years ago to bring together the huge range of events which take place in the city during the summer and to allow Plymouth to market itself.
This year's line-up can be found at www.plymouthsummerfestival.com

The Saturdays set to perform in Plymouth
The Saturdays set for Plymouth Pavilions show (news)
Girl group The Saturdays are set to visit Plymouth Pavilions this summer as part of their first headline tour.
The band consists of Frankie Sandford, Rochelle Wiseman, Vanessa White, Mollie King and Una Healy. Both Sandford and Wiseman were formerly part of S Club Juniors.
Una told WOSW: “I can’t believe we are about to go out on our first very own tour. We hadn’t even released our debut single this time last year and nobody knew us. So many great things have happened.”
The Saturdays have had a growing fanbase since their first single was released in 2008 and also have a number of celebrity fans including Girls Aloud (who they supported on their Tangled Up tour in 2008), the Pussycat Dolls, and Lily Allen.
The group's debut album, Chasing Lights, produced three UK top ten singles, If This Is Love, Up, and Issues, and was said by The Times to 'eclipse recent efforts of the Sugababes and Pussycat Dolls'.
The band recently released the Comic Relief single, Just Can't Get Enough, a cover of the Depeche Mode original.
This reached number two in the UK Singles Chart. The band re-issued their album this month to include the charity record. A new single will be released to coincide with the tour.
They were last seen in the region switching on Barnstaple's Christmas lights.
The Saturdays hit Plymouth Pavilions on July 1. Tickets cost £20 and go on sale at 10am on March 21. Call 0845 146 1460 for details.

Jimmy Carr Adds Extra Plymouth Pavillions Date
Due to popular demand, Jimmy Carr has added another Plymouth date to his UK tour, heading to the Plymouth Pavilions for a sell-out show on June 27 and the new date of Friday, July 31.
This summer Jimmy will take his dry and sardonic one-liners to a whole new level as he launches his brand new live tour, Joke Technician.
Never one to recycle jokes, the Joke Technician tour will contain all-new, unseen material, completely updated from that seen in any of his previous performances and DVD releases.
As Jimmy explained: “This show is exactly the same as last year’s except every single word. It’s rude, crude and offensive but those aren’t the only reasons you’ll enjoy it.”
Tickets for the new Plymouth date (which is not suitable for under 16s) cost £20 on 0845 146 1460 or visit http://www.plymouthpavilions.com/
